Mr McKenna, a highly skilled Spinal Surgeon, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of spine-related issues that cause pain or nerve symptoms. With extensive training in orthopaedic surgery, Mr McKenna is particularly adept at identifying and addressing pain originating from the discs, facet joints, or nerve compression in the spine. These symptoms may arise from degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or spondylolisthesis. M McKenna is also proficient in treating conditions involving the sacroiliac (SI) joint, a common but often overlooked source of lower back and buttock pain.
Given his comprehensive orthopaedic background, Mr McKenna is ideally placed to evaluate and distinguish whether a patient's pain is truly spinal in origin or if it may be stemming from other areas such as the hips, shoulders, or other joints. This holistic approach ensures that each patient receives an accurate diagnosis and the most effective treatment plan, whether that involves surgical intervention or conservative management.
Mr McKenna is known for employing the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques, which allow for quicker recovery times and less postoperative discomfort. His commitment to patient-centered care, coupled with his expertise in spinal and orthopaedic conditions, makes him a trusted specialist for those suffering from complex and chronic pain syndromes.
His special interest is in anterior and lateral surgery of the lumbar spine, using minimally invasive surgical techniques to promote early recovery. He also performs motion preserving surgery (total disc arthroplasty) of the cervical and lumbar spine and is the foremost user of the ESP lumbar disc replacement in the UK. He has been performing both lumbar and cervical disc replacements since 2003.
Mr Mckenna has been performing robot-assisted spine surgery at The London Clinic for over 2 years using the Excelcius Spinal Robot. He also has an interest in regenerative techniques and performs intradiscal stem cell therapy for back pain.
